We are happy to announce the appointment of Jamilla Harper as our new Chief Operating Officer. Jamilla’s thoughts on returning home, and to Metanoia in particular, are inspired by our efforts to remain focused on the citizens that already live in our community during the explosion of growth surrounding our community. Jamilla shares, “While the entire Charleston area is in a period of rapid growth, it’s exciting to come back home and join Metanoia’s efforts to ensure that the community and residents remain central to that growth.”
Jamilla is from the Lowcountry and was a co-founder for the College of Charleston’s Bonner Leader Program, a collective group of students focused on service, leadership, and being agents of social change. She worked for Metanoia as an AmeriCorps VISTA after finishing up her dual Bachelor’s degrees in Corporate Communications and Spanish. Jamilla then traveled to Kenya with the support of the The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Fellowship with the support of Daniel Island Rotary Club while simultaneously pursuing her Master’s in Development Studies. Jamilla most recently served as the Kenya Associate Director for Kounkuey Design Initiative, providing overarching operational support for the Kenya office through nurturing relationships and influencing organizations in community-driven development efforts. What we find in Jamilla is a community-focused leader who can warmly leverage resources with partners while deeply engaging neighbors, friends and family in the Lowcountry. Her experience both with Metanoia and in Kenya has created a strong foundation of community organizing and thoughtful consideration of neighbor’s needs, as well as a sensitivity to ensuring all voices are respected, heard, and represented. Jamilla puts it best, “I have learned so much internationally in the field of community development, I’m most excited to be able to be able to bring that range of experience and thinking, values and principles into Metanoia and the place that I call home. “ Jamilla is precisely the leader we were looking for as we push forward together!
