On Wednesday July 23, students from our Freedom School will join their parents and community members as they march to Sterret Hall for a rally to raise awareness about a new rail yard coming soon to the old Navy Base.
The arrival of the new rail yard facility will bring few positive and many negative consequences for our neighbors here in Chicora-Cherokee. While there is the potential for new job opportunities for neighborhood residents, there is also a high potential for lowered property values as well as air, noise, light and water pollution. One thing is for sure: Sterret Hall will be demolished to make way for the new facility.
The rally will be a great opportunity for neighborhood residents- children and adult alike- to voice their concerns about the negative effects of the new facility. It will also be a forum for discussing ideas about how to best mitigate these effects. For example, how and where can we replace the only public recreational and sports facility in our neighborhood?
