National Day of Social Action – July 17, 2019

“Protect Children, Not Guns”

Wednesday, July 17, 2019

(NORTH CHARLESTON, SC) Metanoia Community Development Corporation will join over 180 Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® sites in 87 cities and 28 states across the country Wednesday, July 17, for a National Day of Social Action to “Protect Children, Not Guns.” More than 200 local children and community members will march in the Chicora Cherokee neighborhood and leave silhouette images to reflect the thousands of children and teens who lose their lives to gun violence every year in America.

This action will be supplemented by a national moment of silence, a letter-writing campaign, digital advocacy efforts, and a teach-in. Children and CDF Freedom Schools site leaders will rally community members to support youth safety, and protect children, not guns.

Metanoia Freedom School parents and scholars, Chief of Police of North Charleston Reggie Burgess, State Representative Marvin Pendarvis, Councilman Michael Brown, Founding Member at My Community’s Keeper Mentoring Group Keith Smalls, Metanoia CEO Rev. Bill Stanfield, and Charleston Promise Neighborhood Engagement Manager Radia Heyward will participate in the march.

This gun violence awareness and prevention effort is part of CDF Freedom Schools. The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading and empowers them to believe in their ability to make a difference.

The National Day of Social Action is the cornerstone of the civic engagement component that encourages community service and social justice advocacy. A child or teen is killed with a gun every 2 hours and 34 minutes in the United States. 3,410 children and teens were killed by guns in 2017—enough to fill 71 school buses. Guns kill more children under 5 each year than law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

The march will begin at Chicora Elementary School (3100 Carner Ave. North Charleston, SC 2940) at 3:00 PM.
